School refusal is a growing concern impacting students, families, and schools across all grade levels. This informative and practical workshop is designed for administrators, teachers, school counselors, social workers, parents, therapists, and anyone interested in understanding the complex reasons behind school refusal and chronic absenteeism. Participants will explore the emotional, behavioral, social, and environmental factors that contribute to school avoidance, including anxiety, depression, bullying, learning challenges, family stress, trauma, and social pressures.

The workshop will highlight the most common ages for school refusal—often during transitional periods such as ages 5–7 and 11–14—and discuss warning signs that may appear before attendance problems escalate. Attendees will gain insight into what school refusal looks like at home and in school settings, while learning supportive, compassionate, and effective strategies to encourage attendance without increasing shame, power struggles, or distress.
